#65 Postcards from the States: Coyotes, Chris Voss, and the nicest tow truck driver

Another epic week on the road: we’ve taken in the majestic sweep of the Grand Tetons, the geysers of Yellowstone, and the jagged beauty of Glacier. Wildlife sightings were off the scale: wolves, another bear, bald eagles, mountain goats, bison, pronghorns, coyotes, a beaver, and more deer and little critters than you could shake a hiking pole at.

We’ve swum in lakes, hiked ridgelines, sampled local eats, driven mountain passes, and I’ve completely fallen for Montana 🥰

But we’ve also had to take the rough with the smooth …

Disaster struck late one night when the car gave up the ghost, leaving us stranded and rerouting to the dodgiest motel imaginable.

Dodgy motel with a sticky phone 🤢☎️

After deep cleaning our hands and reining in the hysteria I cracked on getting us out of our predicament, and thank goodness for Chris Voss tactical empathy!!! We kept calm, listened hard, and ended up turning the whole thing around.

The car rental company jumped in to make calls, we got a refund on a supposedly non-refundable room, and somehow secured special approval for the rental company to fund an $1800 tow all the way to Seattle. Result: zero disruption to the itinerary and a masterclass in how much people want to help when you connect properly. Thank you, Chris Voss!

After a very unsettled night (sleeping in Alfie’s sleeping bag liner so as not to make contact with the motel bedding), Jeremy our tow guy arrived, and voila six hours later we’d been towed across state lines by the nicest man in America, learned a bunch about American living, and arrived in Seattle ready for our next adventure – whale watching – can not wait!!!! ⛴️🐋
